SIMO MÄKELÄ - WHAT KIND OF SKATER ARE YOU?
Let’s keep the English flowing, because this young lad from Lahti, Finland, knows a lot of things but German is none of them. Just like Youness, 22-year-old Mäkelä is part of the Nike SB rooster and was handpicked by Arto himself to join Alien Workshop Europe. And because PLACE doesn’t like obvious success stories, we decided to humiliate Simo with our malicious multiple-choice questionnaire – enjoy!

1. Simo, please complete the following sentence: I like skateboarding, because ...

a) I can chill, sleep in, shoot one photo per year and still get paid.
b) it’s the ultimate freedom.
c) it’s easier to get chicks than as an inline skater.

My answer would be C – skateboarding is freedom!

2. When I had long hair people told me I looked exactly like ...

a) a young Robert Smith
b) a young Mick Jagger
c) a young Johnny Ramone

Definitely Mick Jagger! So the Answer is B.

3. Living on the street for a while with no home …

a) was kind of cool, because I was already on the spot when I wanted to go skate.
b) was fucked up.
c) made me to appreciate „common“ things more
d) was a time I don’t regret.

True, I was homeless for a while. I don’t regret this period in my life because, as you said, it made me appreciate the little things in life a lot more. So that makes it a time I don’t regret – a mix of answers C and D.

4. Pirkka Pollari …

a) has helped me out a lot and is a true friend.
b) just wanted to hang out with me to become more famous.
c) is a wanker, but I still love him.

Pirkka has definitely helped out a lot and is a true friend, a “fokkin wanker still fo sho”.

5. Being on Alien Workshop Europe ...

a) is something I really appreciate.
b) makes me afraid, that Steve Berra wants to take me into Scientology soon.
c) makes me afraid I have to backlip double-kinked handrails in my next videopart.

Being on Alien is something I truly appreciate. It’s one of the best companies around and I’d like to thank Arto for keeping the faith in me.

6. If I wouldn’t be skating, I’d be ...

a) a model
b) a rockstar
c) a discus thrower
d) a pornstar

I’d go for rockstar. It’s kinda like skateboarding, because I could still travel and get some girls. So let’s log in answer B.

7. When my NIKE team manager Oki says: „When I saw him the first time in 2002, I knew that he’d be Finland’s future of skateboarding“, I feel …

a) honored, because he put me on NIKE and I’m thankful for that
b) he can fuck off. I’ll take the next best offer and change over to K-Swiss.
c) that he underestimated me. Why Finland? What about the rest of the world?

Let’s stick to answer A, because it’s true: I feel honored that he put me on Nike and I’m thankful for all the support...
